Monday at Love Field Airport in Dallas, a 37-year-old woman fired several gunshots, reportedly at the ceiling, before an officer shot and wounded her, according to authorities.

The woman was dropped off at the airport at 11 a.m., walked inside near the ticket counters, and used a restroom, according to Dallas police chief Eddie Garcia at a news conference. He stated that the woman emerged wearing a hooded sweatshirt or other unfamiliar attire, drew a revolver, and fired several shots, allegedly at the ceiling.

Garcia stated, "At this time, we do not know exactly where the individual was aiming."

Garcia stated that nearby police shot the lady in her "lower extremities," injuring her and allowing her to be apprehended. She was sent to a nearby hospital for care.

"Aside from the suspect, no other individuals were injured in this incident," Garcia stated.

The police named the lady, 37-year-old Portia Odufuwa, and did not speculate about her motivation.

The chief stated, "We wanted to assure the community that this is not an active situation."

Karen Warner told The Dallas Morning News that she was checking in for her trip when she heard a loud altercation followed by a gunshot approximately 20 feet (6 meters) behind her. Then she began to run.

Unable to ascertain the nature of the dispute, Warner stated, "I heard approximately ten more gunshots as I fled."

Love Field, one of the two major airports in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, ceased airport operations after the incident but reported that they had restarted at 3:45 p.m. The Federal Aviation Administration halted flights for a couple of hours while police conducted an investigation, but flights were permitted to continue by mid-afternoon.

According to a spokeswoman, Southwest Airlines, which utilizes Love Field as a hub, canceled most of its flights planned to depart or arrive at Love Field before 6 p.m. CDT. According to FlightAware, on Monday at Love Field, Southwest canceled 85 flights according to the flight tracking website.

The shooting was not the airport's first violent event.

In 2016, a police officer shot and wounded a man outside of Love Field after police said he approached the officer with giant landscaping pebbles in his hands after allegedly attacking his ex-car girlfriend with a traffic cone and rocks while she left him off at the airport.
