According to Politico magazine, the US Supreme Court is ready to reverse a landmark decision providing abortion for women across the country.
Justice Samuel Alito writes in a 98-page draft opinion leaked to Politico that the 1973 Roe v Wade decision allowing abortion across the United States is "egregiously wrong."
According to the leaked document, Justice Alito stated: "Roe was egregiously incorrect, its rationale was egregiously inadequate, and the ruling had unfavorable effects.
"And, far from achieving a national consensus on abortion, Roe and Casey have fueled debate and exacerbated division."
Four other Republican-appointed justices – Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett – voted with Alito during the justices' December conference following oral arguments, Politico said.
If the Supreme Court of the United States reverses the verdict, "trigger laws" could immediately make abortion illegal in 22 states. The Supreme Court is not likely to rule until early July.
The court considers the 1973 statute while it considers a challenge to Mississippi's 15-week abortion restriction, which the justices heard in December.
However, the alleged threat to Roe v Wade comes when reproductive rights are under attack in Republican-leaning states around the United States.
And it triggered an immediate uproar from Democrats and rallies outside the Supreme Court on Monday night by pro-and anti-abortion activists.
The "most draconian restriction of rights in the last half-century."
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader - both Democrats – issued a joint statement stating that if the story is genuine, the "Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the last 50 years."
"If the story is genuine, the Supreme Court is on the verge of imposing the most significant restriction of rights in the last 50 years - not only on women but all Americans. The Republican-appointed Justices' rumored votes to overturn Roe v. Wade "would go down in history as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern times," the statement stated.
Additionally, the statement stated that several of these conservative Justices, who are not accountable to the American people, lied to the US Senate, tore up the Constitution, and sullied both precedent and the Supreme Court's reputation, all at the expense of tens of millions of women who may soon lose their bodily autonomy and constitutional rights based on half a century of reliance.
"The party of Lincoln and Eisenhower has degraded totally into the Trump party. Every Republican Senator who voted for Trump Justices while believing that this day would never come will now have to explain themselves to the American people," the statement stated.
