Authorities said Saturday that over 34,000 police officers and Armed Force soldiers will be deployed in Chile during Sunday's presidential, legislative, and regional elections.
Military soldiers will be stationed at the 2,800 voting places, while law police will be in charge of maintaining public order.
According to Gen. Juan Muoz, Head of the Police Department, such an institution will establish three security rings in areas surrounding voting booths, as well as key roadways and avenues.
Police personnel will deploy helicopters and drones to monitor the voting process throughout the day, as per the newspaper La Tercera.
“As if the loss of prestige of the Police Officers were not enough, likely to a disproportionate raid in the use of force,” constituent and academic Christian Viera wrote.
