According to USA TODAY, at least 46 people died after Hurricane Ida's leftovers slammed into the northeast US, triggering downpours and flooding.

New York reported sixteen deaths, while New Jersey reported 23, Pennsylvania reported five, and Maryland and Connecticut reported one.

Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey stated at a press conference that the majority of the 23 deaths were caused by people becoming trapped in their automobiles as floodwaters rose.

"Please keep each of them and their families in your thoughts and prayers, and let's hope that number doesn't rise," Murphy said, adding, "Please stay off the highways." We aren't out of the woods yet."

Ida made landfall in Louisiana on Sunday, killing at least nine people in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama due to flooding and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Ida appears to have passed its peak, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist John Feerick of USA TODAY.

"The United States is no longer a viable option. We had anticipated a lot of rain, but look how rapidly it fell, especially in cities like New York. Three and a half inches in an hour, which wreaked havoc on the infrastructure "'I notified the site,' he said.

The storm's center is over 100 miles east of Massachusetts and traveling northeast, according to Feerick.
