Officials said one student was killed in a shooting at a North Carolina high school on Wednesday, and they were searching for the perpetrator.

Mount Tabor High School was placed on lockdown immediately after emergency responders, sheriff's deputies, and police officers arrived just after noon to hunt for the suspect, who she said was believed to be a student at the school, according to Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson.

According to Thompson, the injured student was transferred to a local hospital, where he died.

Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. of Forsyth County, who arrived at the school with deputies and officers on the initial call, identified the deceased kid as William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr.

Kimbrough added, "I haven't cried in a long time, but I've been crying since I left the hospital."

All other pupils were safe, according to Sheriff's Office spokesperson Christina Howell, and officials were "actively seeking the suspect."

Police closed off roads leading to the school, which has over 1,500 children enrolled, and a large number of emergency vehicles were on the scene.

Parents who were desperate for information parked their cars on the sidewalks several blocks away from the school as police directed traffic away from the institution. Parents and students were observed strolling to a neighboring shopping area.

Students were advised to hide because there was an active shooter on campus, according to Christopher Johnson's son, who heard gunshots while in the school gym.

Johnson, whose kid was still at the school awaiting transportation to a pickup point, said, “You see stuff like this in the media.” “It's terrifying to think it reached out and touched you this time. My son is not a victim, but he is a participant in this, and he will most likely remember it for the rest of his life.”

Later, Mount Tabor kids were spotted being escorted off campus by law enforcement cars to be reunited with their parents.

More schools in the neighborhood were put on lockdown as a precaution, according to the sheriff's office, but no other shootings or injuries had been reported.

In a statement, Gov. Roy Cooper said he had been briefed by law enforcement and that this was the state's second school shooting this week.

After a student was shot and wounded during a fight at a Wilmington high school on Monday, a 15-year-old was accused.

Cooper stated, "We must work to ensure the safety of students and educators, apprehend the shooter quickly, and keep guns off school grounds."
