According to the Los Angeles Superior Court, former film producer Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape in a trial on Monday. This is the second conviction for Weinstein, who became the face of #MeToo sexual assault allegations five years ago.
The jury found Weinstein guilty of rape, oral coercion, and sexual penetration with a foreign object against one woman but acquitted him of charges against a second claimed victim.
The jury could not decide on two allegations, including rape, by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of the Democratic governor of California, Gavin Newsom, and one other woman's complaints.
Weinstein, 70, is already serving a 23-year jail sentence for sexual misbehavior committed in New York.
Weinstein was charged in Los Angeles with seven charges of rape and sexual assault by four women for incidents between 2004 and 2013.
During five weeks of testimony in Los Angeles Superior Court, accusers, including documentary filmmaker Siebel Newsom, said that Weinstein misled them into believing they were attending business meetings.
Judge Lisa Lench of the Superior Court ordered a mistrial on the charges where the jury could not reach a decision, including Siebel Newsom's allegations.
During graphic evidence, the women said that the influential producer of "Pulp Fiction" and "Shakespeare in Love" masturbated in front of them and grabbed or raped them.
Siebel Newsom and three other women testified in support of the two accusations of rape and five counts of sexual assault against Harvey Weinstein.
Four additional women provided similar testimony to bolster the prosecution's claims that Weinstein regularly misused his Hollywood power position to prey on women.
They claim that he promised to assist them in gaining an audition or a book deal but then organized meetings during which his employees disappeared, leaving them alone with him.
Weinstein claimed that his sexual interactions were voluntary and pled not guilty.
Attorneys for the defense contended that the women willingly had sex with Weinstein because they felt he would advance their careers, as part of a pervasive "casting couch" mentality in the film industry, as they put it. In two instances, the sexual intercourse was allegedly faked.
In addition, they emphasized that some of the women, including Siebel Newsom, maintained communication with Weinstein, which they contended was inexplicable if he had abused them.
Siebel Newsom and her husband attended a pre-Oscars party organized by Weinstein and have sent him numerous polite emails over the years.
In February 2020, Weinstein was found guilty of sexual misconduct in New York. In July 2021, he was deported from New York to a Los Angeles prison.
Weinstein is appealing his conviction and prison sentence in New York.
The allegations against Harvey Weinstein contributed to the #MeToo movement of women speaking out against sexual harassment and abuse by influential men in the media, politics, and other areas.
