Kirstie Alley, the two-time Emmy Award-winning actress who rose to popularity for her role on the hit television series Cheers,' passed away on Monday after a brief fight with cancer, according to Reuters. She was 71 years old.
Her death was also verified by a statement published by her children on her official Twitter account, who stated that Alley passed away after receiving cancer treatment at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida.
The statement from True and Lillie Parker read, "To all our friends, far and wide around the world, we regret to inform you that our wonderful, fierce, and loving mother passed away after a struggle with cancer that was only recently found."
"She was surrounded by her closest family members and fought with great vigor, leaving us convinced of her never-ending enthusiasm for life and the next adventures. She was an even more remarkable mother and grandmother than she was a movie icon."
In 1991, Alley won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performance as Rebecca Howe in the NBC sitcom 'Cheers,' in which she appeared from 1987 to 1993 and for which she was nominated for both awards. In 1994, she received her second Emmy for the television movie "David's Mother."
During the 1980s and 1990s, Alley appeared in numerous films, including "Look Who's Talking," "It Takes Two," "Deconstructing Henry," and "Drop Dead Gorgeous."
