Wednesday in Florida, former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James, accusing her of using her position to wage a "war of intimidation and harassment" against him.
The 41-page lawsuit filed in Palm Beach County, where Trump resides, accuses James of violating the law in Florida and New York during her investigation into the former president's business dealings, which he claims were politically motivated before the midterm elections in 2022.
Trump's attorneys wrote in Wednesday's lawsuit, "What began as a cartoonish, thinly-veiled effort to publicly malign President Trump for personal political gain has morphed into a plot to obtain control of a global private enterprise ultimately owned by a Florida revocable trust in which President Trump is the settlor."
In September, James filed a $250 million lawsuit against Trump, his children Eric, Ivanka, and Donald Trump Jr., and the Trump Organization, alleging "staggering" fraud in the family real estate business.
She accused the former president and the Trump Organization of inflating the value of his prized assets, such as his homes and golf courses, to obtain advantageous loans and tax benefits.
The lawsuit seeks to revoke Trump's ability to conduct business in the Empire State and prohibit him and his company from purchasing commercial real estate for several years.
Trump himself announced the lawsuit on Truth Social on Wednesday and used the post to criticize New York's rising crime rate.
"While James does nothing to protect New York from these violent crimes and criminals, she attacks great and upstanding businesses... which have done nothing wrong, such as the very successful, job- and tax-producing Trump Organization that I have painstakingly built over many years," Trump said on his social media platform.
"The crooked and partisan James now believes it is the responsibility of the State of New York to go after my revocable trust and snoop into my private estate plan to find ways to recklessly harm me, my family, my businesses, and my tens of millions of supporters.
"This would not be occurring if I had not been elected President of the United States and am now leading both Democrats and Republicans by substantial margins in the polls."
A spokesperson for James's office stated that the president's previous two attempts to end the investigation were unsuccessful.
The spokesperson told Axios, "Multiple judges have rejected Donald Trump's baseless attempts to evade justice, and no number of lawsuits will deter us from pursuing this fraud."
"We filed suit against Donald Trump for extensive financial fraud. This has not changed, nor has our determination to ensure that no one, no matter how powerful or politically connected, is above the law."
