Ray Liotta, well known for his roles as gangster Henry Hill in Goodfellas and baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams, has passed away. He was 67.
A non-media-authorized officer at the National Forensic Science Institute of the Dominican Republic confirmed Ray Liotta's death and said his body was sent to the Cristo Redentor morgue. Representatives for Liotta told The Hollywood Reporter and NBC News that he died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday evening, and he was in the Dominican Republic for movie production.
Thursday, Lorraine Bracco, who played Karen Hill in the film Goodfellas, tweeted that she was "utterly devastated to hear this horrible news about dear Ray. People will approach me wherever I am in the world and tell me their favorite film is Goodfellas. Then, they invariably inquire about the most enjoyable aspect of filmmaking. My response has consistently been the same... Ray Liotta."
Alessandro Nivola, who recently played alongside Ray Liotta in The Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark, tweeted, "I feel extremely fortunate to have acted beside this legend in one of his final acts. The scenes we performed together were among the most memorable in my acting career. He was hazardous, unexpected, humorous, and complimentary of other actors. Too soon."
In Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, he portrayed real-life gangster Henry Hill in his most prominent role. However, he had to fight for it through several auditions and studio pleadings.
