Vicky White, an Alabama jail officer, accused of aiding the escape of Casey White, no relation, shot and killed herself in a hospital.

Casey White surrendered after they were tracked down and US Marshals slammed into their vehicle in Evansville, Indiana.

The death of the 56-year-old could make it more difficult for authorities to determine why a respected prison employee would risk her life to assist the 38-year-old convict, who had a violent past and was awaiting trial for capital murder.

Before Vicky White's murder, Alabama's Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton stated, "We got a dangerous man off the street today,"

"He will never see the light of day again. Not just our community benefits from this development. This is beneficial for our nation."

Vicky White, who served as the assistant director of corrections at the Lauderdale County Jail, allegedly assisted Casey White in escaping.

He was serving a 75-year sentence for attempted murder and other offenses. He was awaiting trial for stabbing a woman in a 2015 burglary, resulting in the death penalty if he is convicted.

The Marshals Service also revealed that Casey White threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and sister in 2015 and claimed he wanted the cops to kill him.

Vicky White told staff she was taking the 6ft 9 inmate to a courthouse for a mental health evaluation, but they left instead.

Their vehicle was discovered abandoned in Tennessee. They vanished until US Marshals were tipped off on Sunday about CCTV photographs of a man like Casey White leaving a Ford pickup truck at a car wash in Evansville.

On Monday, they were sighted, sparking a pursuit that ended when US Marshals crashed into them.

Casey White was lightly injured, while Vicky White shot herself.

"We're lucky that no law enforcement was injured, no innocent civilians were injured, the pursuit was short in nature and we have both people in custody," said Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding in Indiana.

On May 2, a warrant was issued for Vicky White, charging her with first-degree assisting or permitting escape.

Mr. Singleton stated that he sought to learn why she moved from being a correctional employee with an exemplary record to allegedly aiding a convict in escaping.

"I had complete confidence in Vicky White. She has been a model employee. What in the world led her to act in this manner? I am unsure. I do not know if we will ever know, "He added that the plot appeared to have been developed over time.

It looked like she treated Casey White more than other detainees due to their relationship.

Her family was shocked by her involvement. Marshals reported that she had recently purchased a rifle and a shotgun, and she was known to possess a handgun.

She had sold her home for around half of its market worth and concealed her recently purchased Ford Edge in a shopping center without license plates. Later footage showed the pair arriving at the center, picking up the Ford, and leaving.

The escape occurred on Vicky White's last day of employment.

However, the mental health evaluation she claimed was taking Casey White to was not arranged.

Contrary to jail regulation, a second officer did not accompany her, and their absence went unnoticed for the rest of the day.
