The Guatemalan National Institute of Seismology, Meteorology, Volcanology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) reported at least 15 earth earthquakes ranging from 3.2 to 5.0 on the Richter scale.
The so-called earthquake swarm occurred as a result of a tremor recorded last night (5.0) with an epicenter 71 kilometers off the coast of the department of Retalhuleu, according to the scientific organization.
There have been 15 earth earthquakes in the previous 24 hours, but only yesterday's was noticed, according to the INSIVUMEH, while the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction ruled out human and infrastructure damage.
Another key piece of information, according to the source, is that 15 incidents have occurred in the previous week with origins in the Pacific Ocean and the shores of Mexico, El Salvador, and Santa Rosa.
Because of its location near the confluence of the Caribbean, Cocos, and North American tectonic plates, as well as local geological faults, Guatemala is vulnerable to these natural events.
