A bail application for Aryan Khan was denied by an Indian court on Wednesday, nearly three weeks after he was arrested in a cruise ship narcotics bust case.
Mr. Khan, the son of Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, was arrested and seven others in the early hours of October 2 as Narcotics Control Bureau officers seized the Cordelia cruise ship as it traveled from Mumbai to Goa.
He will be held in Mumbai's high-security Arthur Road jail until his attorneys can file a new application in the High Court of Bombay.
Under India's strict anti-narcotics legislation, Mr. Khan faces allegations of selling, consuming, and procuring prohibited substances, as well as "conspiracy."
Prosecutors had opposed his release, claiming Mr. Khan may use his "influence" to interfere with evidence and witnesses because the inquiry was still in its early stages.
Investigators claimed they did not seize any narcotics from Mr. Khan during the raid. Still, they charged him with conspiring to obtain drugs after discovering "incriminating" WhatsApp exchanges on his phone.
The talks, according to the CIA, connect him to a network of narcotics dealers and smugglers. According to the statement, his detention was deemed necessary to "uncover the international drug trafficking chain,."
All charges have been leveled against Mr. Khan, who has rejected them all. He further said that despite strong evidence that he did not have any drugs, he was implicated in the case by the agency.
The charges are "absurd" and "false," according to his lawyers.
In this instance, the agency has detained 20 people so far, including five narcotics dealers.
Mr. Khan's father, Shah Rukh Khan, 55, a Bollywood megastar and one of the world's most popular performers, has yet to comment on his son's detention.
The actor has starred in over 100 films throughout his three-decade film career and has remained a non-controversial character.
His son's detention has polarized India's social media, with hashtags supporting and against Mr. Khan trending on Twitter.
In recent years, rumors of widespread drug addiction have hounded Bollywood.
Sushant Singh Rajput, a well-known actor, allegedly committed suicide last year after a history of drugs misuse.
