The District of Columbia's Metropolitan Police Department made a video statement about the shooting, which occurred shortly after 11 p.m.

According to Executive Assistant Chief Ashan M. Benedict, officers responded to shots fired in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Southeast, and found six people injured: three men, two women, and one child.

Benedict said the 6-year-old girl was shot and killed on the spot and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
