Christina Aguilera has written a lengthy statement about Britney Spears' tumultuous conservatorship, supporting calls from fans around the world for it to be ended.
Following Spears' emotional 24-minute statement to a Los Angeles court last week, Aguilera stated on Twitter that she has spent recent days reflecting on what she is going through.
“It is intolerable that any woman or human, who wishes to be in charge of her own destiny may not be able to do so,” Aguilera added.
“Being silenced, ignored, bullied, or denied support by those ‘close' to you is the most draining, devastating, and humiliating experience one can have. The mental and emotional devastation this can cause to a person's spirit is not to be underestimated.”
She went on to say, "Every woman must have the right to her own body, her own reproductive system, her own privacy, her own space, her own healing, and her own happiness."
Despite the fact that Aguilera isn't aware of some of the "behind closed doors" information surrounding the conservatorship, she praised Britney's "conviction and desperation" in her "plea for freedom."
“While I am not behind the closed doors of this very layered and personal yet public conversation,” she explained, "all I can do is share from my heart on what I've heard, read, and seen in the media."
“The conviction and desperation in this plea for freedom lead me to believe that this person I used to know has been living in a world devoid of compassion or decency from those in power.”
“To a woman who has worked under conditions and pressure unimaginable to most, I promise you she deserves all of the freedom possible to live her happiest life,” she said at the end of her message.
“My heart breaks for Britney Spears. She is deserving of all of the world's TRUE love and support.”
The remark from Aguilera, who co-starred with Spears on The Mickey Mouse Club in the early 1990s, is the latest expression of support from a celebrity, following Mariah Carey, Halsey, and others.
Justin Timberlake, who co-starred with Spears in The Mickey Mouse Club and dated her for three years, also expressed his support, stating, "We should all be supporting Britney right now."
Timberlake officially apologized to Spears earlier this year, saying that he had "failed" her by participating in a system that "condones misogyny and racism."
Spears described her conservatorship, which sparked the #FreeBritney movement, as "abusive" in her testimony. She claims that while she is under conservatorship, she is not allowed to have additional children, marry, or use her IUD.
She later apologized for her silence on the problem leading up to her testimony on Instagram, stating she was sorry for "pretending like (she's) been OK."
“I'm not pleased with myself. I'm having trouble sleeping. She wrote, "I'm so angry it's insane."
“I'm also depressed. Every day, I cry.”
In recent days, her family has sent out several signals on the conservatorship. While Britney's sister Jamie Lynn expressed her support for her, stating, "I am so proud of her for using her voice," Britney's brother-in-law (and Jamie Lynn's husband) Jamie Watson defended her family, telling The New York Post, "I can assure you her family loves her and wants the best for her."
The president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America also issued a statement in support of Spears in reaction to the claim regarding her IUD.
