Metro train collision in Kuala Lumpur injures 200 people

According to media reports, two metro light rail trains collided in a tunnel in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur on Monday, injuring over 200 people, including 47 seriously.

According to media reports, the accident occurred about 8:30 p.m. local time when an empty train collided head-on with another carrying 232 passengers on the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) line at an underground section near the KLCC station outside the Petronas Towers.

166 people were lightly injured, while 47 were seriously injured, according to the minister, who added that some of the injured were taken to the hospital.

According to the minister, the empty train was on a trial run.

He said that the accident was the first of its kind in the LRT's 23-year history and that a special panel will be created to investigate the incident.

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, for his part, said on social media that he had been told of the accident and that security and emergency personnel were on the scene.

The prime minister announced that an inquiry into the accident has been requested.
