On Monday, ten people were killed in a mass shooting at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, including the first police officer on the scene. Authorities said at a news conference hours later that a suspect wounded in the violence had been apprehended.

The violence began around 3 p.m. at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder's Table Mesa neighborhood, northwest of Denver, according to police.

Officer Eric Talley, 51, was killed in the shooting, according to Boulder police chief Maris Herold.

“The first officer on the scene, Officer Talley, was fatally shot. I want to applaud the bravery of the officers who responded, not just from the Boulder Police Department, but from all over the county and region.”

According to police, the alleged gunman is thought to be the only person who survived the carnage with serious injuries.

The man in custody appeared to be limping and had a bloody leg as he went.

Following a deadly rampage in Atlanta last Tuesday that left eight people dead, mostly Asian women, Monday's bloodshed is the second mass shooting in the United States in a week.
