Donald Trump's relationship with Russia during his presidency sparked controversial debate and left a complex legacy in US foreign policy. His relationship with Vladimir Putin, which seemed to shift between praise and concern, has been the subject of intense scrutiny, particularly as tensions between Russia and The West escalated.

This shifting dynamic has drawn the attention of political analysts, foreign policy experts, and global leaders, raising questions about the long-term implications for US-Russia relations. From minimizing Russia's interference in 2016 U.S. elections to praising Putin's leadership, Trump's stance has been characterized by a mix of admiration for the Russian president and skepticism of U.S. intelligence assessments. Despite these findings, Trump downplayed the issue and repeatedly cast doubt on the validity of the intelligence, and creating tensions with his own government.

The most striking moment came during the 2018 Helsinki summit when Trump appeared to side with Putin over U.S. intelligence regarding election meddling. His failure to confront Putin directly was widely criticized, with many questioning whether Trump was too lenient on the Russian leader.

Although Trump imposed sanctions on Russia and occasionally criticized Putin, his overall foreign policy was inconsistent.  His frequent criticism of NATO, calling it "obsolete", raised concerns that he was weakening a critical alliance against Russia. The Mueller investigation found multiple contacts between Trump's team and Russian officials, although it did not find any direct collusion.

International reactions to Trump's approach to Russia were mixed. European leaders like Germany's Angela Merkel and France Emmanuel Macron, fearing Trump's praise for Putin and criticism of NATO could weaken the West's stance against Russia. The UK was alarmed, especially after the poisoning of a foreign Russia spy, and saw Trump as too soft on Putin. Ukraine was frustrated by Trump downplaying Russia's threat, while Russia saw him as more supportive than past U.S. residents. Meanwhile, China observed the situation closely, as Trump's stance on Russia impacted broader geopolitical dynamics.

Even after his presidency, Trump continued to express admiration for Putin, a stance that gained more attention after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Critics argued that Trump's praise for Putin risked aligning U.S. interests with an autocratic regime, weakening the West's response to Russian aggression. Trump's attitude towards Russia remains a complex and controversial aspect of his legacy in global diplomacy.
