According to a statement from the Syrian army, five persons, including a soldier, were killed, and 15 others were injured early Sunday morning by an Israeli missile attack on the Syrian capital Damascus.

According to the statement, the Israeli strike was launched from the occupied Golan Heights and targeted many military sites in Damascus, including the residential suburb of Kafar Sousah.

According to the report, several of the wounded are in critical condition, and numerous residences in Damascus and its environs have been damaged.

The statement stated that the air defences prevented the majority of missiles from reaching their targets.

Under the guise of targeting Iranian arms shipments bound for Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel routinely attacks Syrian military installations.

In its original broadcast, Syrian national television stated that Damascus air defences retaliated to an Israeli attack at midnight on Sunday.

Syria is still recovering after the terrible earthquakes that devastated the country's northern region on February 6, killing thousands.
