A second guy has been arrested in connection with the Wednesday shooting at an El Paso, Texas, shopping centre that left one person dead and three others injured.
Peter Pacillas, the interim police chief, stated that the Cielo Vista Mall was still considered a crime scene and would stay closed until the inquiry was concluded.
Mr Pacillas emphasized that the threat had subsided.
"There is no longer any risk. I wish to reiterate that there is no longer any public danger, "he remarked.
Mr Pacilla noted that the two individuals in detention and the victims were all males.
Sergeant Robert Gomez, a spokesperson for the El Paso police, stated that a weapon was seized at the site. However, he was unable to provide additional details.
It is premature to speculate on motivation, he said.
The three injured individuals were sent to local hospitals. In a statement, University Medical Center in El Paso reported that two males in serious condition were being treated for gunshot wounds. The state of the third victim was unknown at the time.
Sergeant Gomez reported that authorities believe the location is secure. He stated, "This is a large scene," It will take some time to empty the mall.
The government has established a reunification centre at a local high school. Earlier, police stated that gunfire was reported in the food court of the retail complex.
The Cielo Vista Mall incident occurred in a crowded retail centre and across a large parking lot from the Walmart, where 23 people were killed in 2019.
The United States has witnessed dozens of mass shootings thus far in 2023. Three students were killed, and five more were injured Monday at Michigan State University.
In January, eleven people were slain as they celebrated the Lunar New Year in a dance club in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, more than 600 mass shootings in which at least four people were killed or injured happened in the United States in 2022.
