The Israeli Air Force struck two terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip overnight Thursday, according to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit.
The strike occurred hours after a rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system in the early evening hours, setting off air raid sirens in the southern city of Sderot and nearby communities.
Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the missile launch. According to the organization, the rocket launch was retaliation for the detention of Palestinian detainees who had celebrated a series of fatal terrorist assaults in Jerusalem that killed seven lives over the weekend.
Sderot and numerous other border settlements sounded their sirens again Thursday night, just minutes before the Israeli attack on Gaza.
