According to authorities, at least ten individuals were killed in a mass shooting following a Lunar New Year celebration in a city east of Los Angeles.
The incident in Monterey Park, California, which occurred at an unidentified business, was reported at 10:22 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, after the Lunar New Year celebration, which was set to stop at 7 p.m. Police stated that the suspect was a guy but did not indicate if he remained at large.
"Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are responding to assist Monterey Park Police Department with a shooting death investigation," the department said in a Sunday morning statement. "There are nine fatalities. There is currently no additional information available."
Monterey Park, located around 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles, is a city of approximately 60,000 and a significant Asian population.
According to the city's website, the Lunar New Year celebrations have attracted thousands of visitors in recent years.
It is the fifth mass shooting in the United States this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today.
