Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been hospitalized, according to his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro.
Michelle Bolsonaro said on her official Instagram account that her husband was hospitalized on Monday for abdominal "discomfort" resulting from injuries sustained in a knife assault at a 2018 political rally.
An ally of the former president informed CNN Brasil that he was hospitalized in the Orlando, Florida, area and began experiencing pain on Sunday evening.
Brazil is still reeling after Sunday's political violence in the capital city of Brasilia, which saw hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters rush the seats of power, vandalize buildings, and elicit harsh international condemnation.
Bolsonaro departed Brazil for the United States on Dec. 30, according to CNN Brasil — just two days before the inauguration of his successor, President-elect Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva. Five government employees were permitted to accompany him to Miami between January 1 and 30, 2023.
Due to his injury, the former leader has been hospitalized multiple times. The stabbing incident occurred during his 2018 campaign, as a mob escorted Bolsonaro on the shoulders of supporters in Juiz de Fora, a city in the southern state of Minas Gerais.
Flavio Bolsonaro, Bolsonaro's son, tweeted at the time that his father's wounds "reached a portion of his liver, lung, and intestine" and that he lost a significant amount of blood.
In January 2019, Bolsonaro had surgery to remove a colostomy bag that had been placed when he was stabbed.
In July 2021, he was hospitalized once more after experiencing abdominal pain and severe hiccups for nearly a week.
