Five people have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man at the Mall of America on one of the final days of the holiday shopping season, police announced Saturday.
Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges announced the arrests in connection with the Friday night shooting in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington and stated that all suspects would be charged with murder, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
According to the Star Tribune, Hodges stated that the apprehended suspects were two 18-year-old men and three 17-year-old male youths. They were taken into custody in the morning at home in adjacent St. Louis Park by SWAT teams from three counties.
The chief stated that one of the 18-year-olds is thought to be the shooter, although another suspect may have also discharged a firearm. A sixth suspect remained at large.
"In Bloomington, if you come to our mall and murder somebody, you get one of these for Christmas," Hodges was reported as saying while holding an orange prison suit.
Saturday, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota tweeted that the mall shooting was "totally unacceptable. We are in contact with local officials to give them the necessary help and resources."
The police have not yet identified the 19-year-old victim, but the police chief and Bloomington's mayor, Tim Busse, have spoken with the victim's family members.
Friday's gunfire at the Nordstrom store in the nation's largest retail mall drove terrified people fleeing for cover. A bullet is claimed to have brushed the jacket of a bystander.
According to authorities, there appeared to be an incident between two groups that evolved into a fistfight, after which someone drew a gun and shot the victim many times. The incident lasted approximately 30 seconds.
Around 7:50 p.m., one of sixteen Bloomington police officers stationed at the mall that day heard gunshots. The police tried to save the victim's life but were unsuccessful.
The lockdown lasted approximately an hour until the mall tweeted that shoppers were allowed to leave. Social media videos depicted individuals cowering in businesses, while an announcement throughout the mall urged shoppers to seek shelter.
The Mall of America has been a tourist attraction and community hub since its opening in 1992. It prohibits firearms on the premises, but customers often do not need metal detectors. In October, the shopping center was testing a "guns detecting system" at one of its entrances.
The mall was locked down in August after patrons fled suspected gunfire, and two individuals were injured on New Year's Eve during an apparent altercation.
