Multiple news sites report that a quake with a magnitude of 6.4 killed at least two people and injured almost a dozen others in the state of California on Tuesday.

The earthquake struck near Ferndale, 210 miles (338 kilometers) northwest of San Francisco, knocking out power to more than 70,000 residences and damaging buildings and roads.

Two persons "died as a result of medical emergencies that occurred during and immediately after the earthquake," according to a statement from the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services, which added that at least eleven others were injured.

"There are reports of widespread damage to highways and residences throughout Humboldt County. Prepare for aftershocks," the agency tweeted as well.

According to the California Office of Emergency Services, at least 80 aftershocks followed one of which was as powerful as magnitude 4.6. (Cal OES).

Mark Ghilarducci, director of the California Office of Emergency Services, stated during a news conference, "We live in earthquake country, and this is another evidence that earthquakes can occur without warning."

There is a 13% probability of another earthquake of magnitude 5.0 or more occurring within the next week, according to state officials, who advised citizens to be prepared.

In a statement, Cynthia Pridmore, a geologist with the California Geological Survey, stated, "People need to be aware of where they are living, especially if they are in vulnerable structures."
