House Republicans advocating for the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas increased pressure on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday by holding a press conference with approximately 20 GOP lawmakers and three former DHS officials.

McCarthy faces opposition from a small number of fellow Republicans to his Speakership, which threatens to derail his candidacy for the gavel.

"Now that we have the majority in the House of Representatives, I anticipate that our party will pursue impeachment in the next Congress," said Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Arizona), who is running as a protest candidate against McCarthy for Speaker and who introduced articles of impeachment against Mayorkas last year.

"Secretary Mayorkas has perpetrated heinous and low crimes. His behavior is not unprofessional. It is not reckless. It is deliberate and intentional "Biggs said.

McCarthy has been quite critical of Mayorkas, but he has declined to commit to impeachment for any Biden officials, stating that he will not politicize impeachment. This position infuriated Biggs, who now has 32 Republican cosponsors for his resolution to impeach Mayorkas.

McCarthy came to the U.S.-Mexico border and urged Mayorkas to quit or face GOP probes and a possible impeachment inquiry after gaining the nomination for Speaker of the House of Representatives against Biggs last month.

Biggs stated in a Washington Examiner opinion piece on Tuesday that McCarthy had added: "a little thickening to weak sauce - but it's not good enough."

Biggs insinuated that McCarthy's resignation call was a political maneuver, telling reporters that McCarthy only resigned "when he understood he was facing someone who could deny him the position of Speaker."

Some members in the news conference, like Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Arizona), whom McCarthy appointed to the key House GOP Steering Committee, and Rep. Kevin Hern, the incoming chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee caucus, support McCarthy for Speaker.

Hern told reporters that there will be widespread support for removing Mayorkas from his position and replacing him with someone capable of carrying out his duties. Obviously, it won't happen immediately, but you must make people aware that problems exist.

The leading Republican case for impeachment of Mayorkas is that he has failed to maintain "operational control" of the border as required by law.

When pressed by Republicans in Congressional hearings, Mayorkas has maintained that the United States has operational control of the country's borders. This attitude has further infuriated detractors and increased calls for his impeachment, with Republicans accusing him of lying to Congress.

Additionally, Republicans accuse Mayorkas of inappropriately failing to hold and release migrants.

Three former Department of Homeland Security officials joined House Republicans at the press conference: Former acting U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan, former acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan, and former U.S. Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott.

Morgan said of Mayorkas, "He was the principal architect of this administration's open border policies, which we know have resulted in drugs pouring through our open borders and killing Americans every single day."
