On Saturday, two nurses were killed in a shooting at a hospital in Dallas, Texas.
The shooting occurred in the Methodist Dallas Medical Center in the 1400 block of North Beckley Avenue at 11:15 a.m. Saturday afternoon, the hospital announced in a press release that Methodist Health System police, Dallas police, and Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the shooting.
"A Methodist Health System Police Officer arrived at the scene, confronted the suspect, and fired his weapon, injuring the suspect," hospital spokesperson Ryan Owens said in a statement. He added that the suspect was transported to a different hospital in an unknown condition and is currently in police custody.
The suspect was identified as Nestor Hernandez, 30, who is currently on parole for aggravated robbery. According to the Dallas Morning News, he is charged with capital murder in relation to the shooting.
The chief executive officer of the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, Charley Wilkison, stated on Twitter that the suspect fatally shot two obstetric nurses.
The hospital system stated in a statement that there is no ongoing threat. It expressed condolences for the unidentified deaths of the two nurses.
"The Methodist Health System Family is devastated by the loss of two cherished team members," its executive leadership said in a written statement. "Our entire organization mourns this incomprehensible tragedy. Our prayers are with our deceased coworkers and their families, as well as with the entire Methodist community. We are grateful for the support of the community during this difficult time."
The hospital stated that Dallas police are assisting Methodist Health System police in an active investigation.
In a Twitter post, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins urged the public to "pray for the family and friends of the victims and the entire [Methodist Health System] team."
Chief of Police of Dallas Eddie Garca tweeted, "Our thoughts are with the staff and victims of today's events. We will do EVERYTHING possible to help with this investigation. This is a tragic failure of our criminal justice system."
A hospital visitor was shot and killed in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September, and four people were killed in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in June.
