At least 17 Democratic lawmakers, including famous progressives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, were arrested outside the Supreme Court in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, according to police.
The US Capitol police stated via Twitter that the protesters obstructed traffic on a neighboring road and were issued three warnings before arrest.
The police reported 35 arrests for Crowding, Obstruction, and Discomfort. "Among those arrested are 17 members of Congress."
The brief demonstration occurred three weeks after a contentious Supreme Court verdict reversed the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which secured women's access to abortion.
Minnesota lawmaker Ilhan Omar tweeted, "Today I was arrested while participating in a civil disobedience action outside the Supreme Court with my colleagues in Congress."
She wrote, "I will continue to do everything in my power to raise awareness of the assault on our reproductive rights."
Carolyn Maloney, a representative from New York, was also arrested and released the following statement: "There is no democracy if women do not have control over their own bodies and decisions regarding their own health, including reproductive care."
"The Republican Party and the right-wing extremists responsible for this decision are not pro-life, but rather pro-controlling the bodies of women, girls, and anyone who can become pregnant."
Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, and others were filmed being brought away from the protest without handcuffs while waving to their fans.
