Following the Supreme Court's decision last month to overturn Roe v. Wade, the last abortion clinic in Mississippi closed Wednesday, a day before a ban on virtually all abortion procedures is set to take effect in the state.

The director of the clinic involved in the infamous Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court case, Shannon Brewer, told The Washington Post in May of her intentions to transfer to New Mexico, where abortions are still permitted.

Now, after a judge denied Jackson Women's Health Organization's motion to halt the Mississippi trigger ban temporarily, Brewer informed The Texas Tribune that her team is relocating to Las Cruces, New Mexico.

As of the 24th of June, the ability to regulate abortion has been delegated to the states, creating a patchwork of rules that will necessitate many women seeking abortions to traverse state lines.

Numerous employers have pledged to cover such travel expenses for their employees, while Democratic states have moved to create safeguards for anyone crossing state boundaries to have the treatment.

According to a release from the governor's office, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an executive order safeguarding medical professionals from "discipline due to an out-of-state resident receiving abortion services in New Mexico," at the end of June.

Grisham's ruling further stipulated that "New Mexico will not entertain extradition attempts from other states relating to receiving or performing reproductive services."

Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Utah, which border New Mexico, prohibit abortions. In the fall of 2017, Texas made headlines with a law that banned abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. This spring, Oklahoma prohibited abortions after conception.

In neighboring Colorado, all stages of pregnancy are permitted for abortions.
