A 5-month-old infant was fatally shot while riding in the trunk of a car in a South Side Chicago neighborhood.

According to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the infant, identified as Cecilia Thomas, was injured in the head Friday evening when shots were fired from another car in the South Shore neighborhood.

Cecilia was transported to a hospital, where she eventually passed away.

Chicago police reported that a 41-year-old guy was in good condition at a hospital after receiving a gunshot wound near his eye.

No arrests have been made, and investigators have released no information on what led to or precipitated the incident. The police stated that they had no new information.

The infant is among Chicago's youngest victims of gun violence. Natalia Derevyanny, a spokesperson for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, said she would have turned six months old in four days.

The Chicago Police Department had registered 282 homicides as of June 19, a decrease from the 316 killings recorded during the same period in 2021. Like many other U.S. cities, Chicago saw a significant surge in killings last year. The 797 homicides in the nation's third-largest city in 2021 — Chicago's highest total for any year in the past 25 years — surpassed Los Angeles' total by 400 and New York's total by nearly 300.

Andrew Holmes, a crisis responder who spoke with Cecilia's mother, expressed fury at the gunman, stating, "you shouldn't sleep at night," and urging the individual to surrender.

"You just murdered this infant. This infant was an infant, and this infant did nothing to you "he said.

Ja'Mal Green, an activist, is offering a $7,900 reward for information regarding the incident.
