Yesterday, the agency in the District of Columbia that investigates attorneys for professional misconduct filed charges against President Donald Trump's former attorney, Rudy Giuliani, for making unfounded assertions in federal court that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

The DC Office of Disciplinary Counsel says that Giuliani, a member of the DC bar, made unfounded statements concerning the outcomes of the 2020 presidential election in Pennsylvania in federal court papers.

A lawyer for Giuliani had no immediate reaction.

The charges come a day after the US House Select Committee investigating January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol held its first prime-time hearing in which it outlined evidence that Trump and his allies attempted to overturn the 2020 election and incite his supporters to prevent Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's victory.

Giuliani, a former Manhattan United States Attorney and mayor of New York City, has been one of Trump's most ardent supporters and has often asserted, without evidence, that the election was stolen.

The new ethical accusations revolve around a series of legal challenges Giuliani filed in federal court in Pennsylvania in 2020. The allegations were filed with the Board of Professional Responsibility of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Giuliani reportedly sought an emergency order to prevent the certification of the presidential election, an order to invalidate ballots cast by sure voters in seven counties, and other orders that would have allowed the state's assembly to choose its electors and declare Trump the winner in Pennsylvania, according to the complaint.

According to the accusations, he violated two professional conduct guidelines in Pennsylvania, which prohibit attorneys from pursuing meritless proceedings without foundation in law or fact and ban behavior detrimental to the administration of justice.

Charges can result in the suspension of a lawyer's license or disbarment.

This is the second time a bar office has brought accusations against Giuliani.

His New York law license was revoked in June 2021 after a state appeals court determined he made "clearly false and misleading" claims that massive voting fraud compromised the election.

After the New York ruling, Giuliani's legal license in Washington, DC, was temporarily suspended.

In addition to having two of his law licenses canceled, Giuliani's business dealings with Ukraine have tarnished his reputation, and federal prosecutors in Manhattan are investigating these ties.

In April 2018, he began representing Trump, a fellow Republican, and New Yorker, in the investigation into Russian intervention in the 2016 presidential election conducted by then-Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Giuliani has not been accused of committing a crime. His attorney asserts that the government investigation is politically motivated.
