Sunday, officials reported that a significant fire swept through an inland container yard in southeast Bangladesh, killing at least five people and wounding more than 100.
Officials reported that a fire broke out at a container factory in Sitakundu, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the port city of Chittagong, on Saturday night, causing many container explosions after a massive explosion at the site.
Sunday morning, firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze, according to a fire service official, Faruk Hossain Shikder. According to locals, the explosion shook the neighborhood and damaged the windows of surrounding homes.
As some of the injured are in severe condition, the death toll could grow, according to Chittagong civil surgeon Mohammed Elias Hossain. He stated that firefighters and police officers were among the injured.
He encouraged all doctors in the district to assist with the crisis and requested blood donations immediately.
It was initially unclear what triggered the fire. Officials from the fire department believe it may have originated from a container of hydrogen peroxide and rapidly spread to additional containers.
In 2020, three persons were murdered when an oil tank exploded at a container depot in the Patenga neighborhood of Chittagong.
