On Sunday, a 48-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest while riding the subway in New York City, the latest in random attacks on the city's transit system.

The suspected gunman left when the train arrived at the next station in Manhattan and remained at large as of Sunday night, according to Kenneth Corey, the NYPD's chief of detectives, during a press briefing.

Corey stated, "Preliminary investigation reveals the suspect was walking back and forth in the same train car and, without provocation, pulled out a gun and fired it at the victim at close range as the train was crossing the Manhattan Bridge,"

When the train arrived at the Canal Street station, the gunman, described simply as a heavy-set, "dark-skinned" man with a beard wearing a hooded sweatshirt, gray sweat trousers, and white sneakers, escaped.

According to authorities, the suspect and the victim were not acquainted and had not interacted previously before the shooting. The victim was not recognized by officers and was declared dead immediately after the 11:40 a.m. gunshot at Bellevue Hospital.

"My heart aches for the victim's loved ones. Everyone has the right to feel secure in our subways. I will continue to work to make it a reality "New York Governor Kathy Hochul tweeted the following.

There has been a substantial increase in violence and random subway attacks in New York City.

Passengers have been forced onto the tracks from platforms, including a woman from Manhattan whose murder was viewed as part of increased hate crimes against Asian-Americans.

On April 12, a gunman detonated smoke bombs and opened fire on a subway car, injuring over twenty individuals. The suspect was apprehended the following day.

Arsenault Rivera, a rider, told the New York Times, "It's pretty harrowing stuff," "If I'd gotten on at a different point, I would have been right there."
