According to a prosecutor, the Oregon romance novelist who penned the fictional work "How to Murder Your Husband" is suspected of murdering her husband in real life. She allegedly admitted to the shooting by accident.
According to Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Shawn Overstreet, 71-year-old Nancy Crampton Brophy, accused of murdering her husband, allegedly discussed the shooting in detail with a prisoner with whom she shared a residence, as reported by Oregon Live.
On June 2, 2018, Nancy Crampton Brophy allegedly murdered her 63-year-old husband, Daniel Brophy.
According to investigators, she was reportedly murdered due to imminent financial troubles, for which she needed the $1.5 million in insurance. According to authorities, Nancy Crampton Brophy shot Daniel Brophy in the back and then when he was on the floor.
According to Overstreet, Nancy Crampton Brophy mistakenly remarked a cellmate and the cellmate should testify after Nancy Crampton Brophy's attorneys presented their case.
Overstreet relayed to the court the purported dialogue between Nancy Crampton Brophy and the cellmate.
Overstreet stated, "Ms. Brophy held her arms out like wingspan and stated, 'I was this far away when the shooting occurred.'"
According to Overstreet, Nancy Crampton Brophy then reversed herself and indicated that the gunfire occurred at close range.
Andrea Jacobs, an inmate, told detectives that Nancy Crampton Brophy appeared embarrassed after remarking and that their relationship became "very awkward."
Overstreet stated, "Ms. Jacobs reported that the situation became very awkward."
During opening comments in the trial, the defense stated that Nancy Crampton Brophy was at a Starbucks when the shooting occurred. Additionally, the reason showed communications between the partners to demonstrate that they were on good terms.
