According to Reuters, the Islamic State (ISIS) organization claimed credit on Sunday for a fatal strike in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula that resulted in the deaths of one officer and ten Egyptian soldiers.

According to an army spokesman and security sources, on Saturday, terrorists attacked a checkpoint near a water pumping station.

According to two security sources, the attack occurred on the road going east from the Suez Canal to Hasanah in the heart of Northern Sinai.

On anonymity, the sources stated that terrorists attacked with an explosive-laden vehicle and heavy weaponry mounted on pickup trucks before military forces fought them off and gave chase.

"The terrorist elements are being pursued and besieged in an isolated area in Sinai," Egyptian army spokesperson Gharib Abdel Hafez was cited by Reuters, adding that five people were hurt in the attack.

For numerous years, Egypt has fought an insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula, which has occasionally spread to other country regions. Sinai Province has claimed the majority of the attacks during this period.

Egypt initiated the operation Sinai 2018 in February 2018 to clear the Sinai Peninsula of Islamic militants.
