According to a representative for the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, uprising at the United States Capitol, Rudy Giuliani, who led Donald Trump's legal efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, has withdrawn from a Friday interview.
Tim Mulvey, the Select Committee's spokesperson, told numerous media sites Thursday night: "Mr. Giuliani agreed to participate in a transcribed interview with the Select Committee." Today, he warned committee investigators that he would not appear unless he was granted permission to record the interview, which was never agreed upon."
"Mr. Giuliani is a critical witness in the conspiracy to overthrow the government, and he remains subpoenaed," Mulvey concluded. If he continues to defy, the committee will explore all available enforcement measures."
Giuliani's attorney, Robert Costello, told CNN that the two parties continue to communicate despite the cancellation of Friday's meeting.
In January, the committee sent subpoenas to Giuliani and other Trump's legal team members for allegedly filing phony legal challenges to the 2020 election, fueling the narrative that the former president's race had been stolen.
Giuliani also spoke at the pre-insurrection gathering in front of the White House on Jan. 6. As with Trump, he said that certifying Biden's victory would cause the country to face an existential crisis and used terminology that referred to bloodshed.
"Let us conduct a trial by combat," Giuliani suggested. "I'm willing to stake my reputation, as is the President, on the fact that we're going to uncover criminal activity there."
