On Thursday, a cargo plane carrying mail and parcels broke in half during an emergency landing in Costa Rica, forcing the international airport to close temporarily.

Costa Rica's Juan Santamaria International Airport reopened hours after a German logistics company's Boeing 757-200 cargo aircraft went off the runway, separating its tail, aviation authorities said.

He added that the smoke billowed from the bright yellow plane as it came to a halt shortly after take-off after the pilot asked permission to make an emergency landing.

According to Luis Munoz, deputy head of Costa Rica's civil aviation authority, the aircraft was en route to Guatemala when its hydraulic system failed.

DHL stated that the crew was uninjured. However, one member received a medical examination as a precaution.

Boeing's representative stated that the company would refer all inquiries to the appropriate authorities.

DHL and airport authorities said they collaborated to relocate the aircraft, adding that it did not affect operations.

DHL stated that the company's incident response team "has been activated, and an investigation with the appropriate authorities will be conducted to ascertain what occurred," DHL stated.

Airport operator Aeris said the airport, located on the outskirts of San Jose, reopened at 3.30 p.m. local time, many hours ahead of schedule following the 10 a.m. incident.

Aeris claimed the closure impacted approximately 8,500 passengers and 57 commercial and freight planes.

Initially, Aeris predicted that the airport would be closed until 6 p.m. local time, affecting three cargo planes and 32 commercial flights to and from the United States, Central America, Mexico, Canada, and Europe.
