At least 111 people have perished in Madagascar since Cyclone Batsirai slammed the Indian Ocean island over a week ago.

According to the national emergency organization, several homes just crumbled in the high winds, leaving roughly 30,000 people in emergency shelters.

Southern African states were already recovering from Tropical Storm Ana in January.

Storms are normal in this corner of the world, but the climate crisis has exacerbated their destructiveness.

It has also exacerbated the drought that has devastated southern Madagascar, making the humanitarian response to these storms even more critical.

According to Madagascar's national disaster service, 87 of the 111 deaths caused by Cyclone Batsirai occurred in the south-eastern province of Ikongo.

According to Reuters, all 55 individuals killed by Tropical Storm Ana were in a different section of Madagascar farther north.
