A landslide in central Colombia on Tuesday killed at least 14 people and wounded 35 others, according to the country's disaster management agency.

Following significant rainfall in the adjacent coffee-growing area, the event at Dosquebradas, near Pereira, occurred.

The UNGRD disaster service reported on Twitter the early morning landslide in the La Esneda neighborhood, "Our current information indicates that 35 people were injured, 14 people died, and one person remains missing." It went on to say that rescue attempts were still underway.

As the Otun river flooded, authorities ordered the evacuation of dozens of surrounding dwellings.

Landslides are widespread in Colombia due to the country's hilly geography, high rainfall, and shoddy or improvised housing construction.

The most recent big landslide tragedy in the country occurred in the city of Mocoa in 2017, killing over 320 persons.
