Gaspard Ulliel, a French actor, best known for portraying a young Hannibal Lecter and Yves Saint Laurent, has died at the age of 37 following a ski accident in the Alps, his family confirmed.
Mr. Ulliel starred in 2007's Hannibal Rising as young serial killer Hannibal Lecter and 2014's biopic Saint Laurent as fashion mogul Yves Saint Laurent.
He also stars in the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series Moon Knight, which wrapped production in October, and is the face of Chanel's men's fragrance Bleu de Chanel.
On Tuesday, the actor was taken to the hospital with a reported skull injury following an accident in the La Rosière ski resort in the Alps' Savoie region. His family confirmed his death on Wednesday.
According to local broadcaster France Bleu, the actor is believed to have collided with another skier at a slope crossing point. The second skier escaped injury, and the accident is still being investigated.
Ulliel won a César Award, the French film industry's highest honor, in 2017 for his leading role in It's Only the End of the World.
"Gaspard Ulliel grew up with cinema, and cinema grew up with him," French Prime Minister Jean Castex stated. They adored one another. It is with regret that we will no longer be able to see his most exquisite interpretations."
In an Instagram tribute, Xavier Dolan, who directed him in It's Only The End Of The World, wrote: "Your entire being transformed my life, a being that I adored and will always adore. I'm at a loss for words. I'm exhausted and shaken by (this)."
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of our friend and colleague Gaspard Ulliel," Disney said in a statement. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time."
Mountain police near the accident site stated that they have been leading five to six rescues per day in recent days as the snow has hardened.
On Saturday, a five-year-old British girl was killed in the neighboring Haute-Savoie region when a skier collided with her. According to the prosecutor in Haute-Savoie, the man faced preliminary manslaughter charges after the accident was likely caused by excessive speed.
