The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen announced Thursday that it launched airstrikes against a military base in Sanaa, which the Iran-aligned Houthis claimed targeted a jail compound and a hospital.

According to Saudi state television, the coalition said it destroyed seven drone and weapons caches at the camp in response to an armed drone launched from north Yemen at Saudi Arabia's Red Sea region of Jizan.

According to the Houthis, bombs dropped on a prison housing more than 3,000 coalition fighters seized during conflicts. According to the statement, the strikes induced panic and dread among detainees.

The Houthi movement controls Yemen's capital. For seven years, the organization has been at odds with the coalition, which backs Yemen's internationally recognized government.

Houthi-run Masirah TV also said that the strikes struck Sanaa's Sabaeen suburb in the early hours, causing damage to many civilian homes and a maternity and children's hospital.

The coalition did not immediately react to a request for comment regarding the alleged attack on prison and hospital.

Throughout the conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions, the Saudi-led coalition has unleashed thousands of airstrikes inside Yemen, striking markets, schools, and hospitals. Houthi troops have launched drone attacks and regularly fired missiles into Saudi Arabian cities.

According to the coalition, the operation was conducted in compliance with international humanitarian law.
