Delaware state police have arrested five people in connection with the robbery of US Representative Mary Gay Scanlon's automobile at gunpoint in a Philadelphia park on Wednesday.
The suspects were located in Ms. Scanlon's vehicle, police said, adding that additional information will be disclosed as it becomes available.
Ms. Scanlon, a Democrat who represents Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District, was unharmed in the mid-afternoon carjacking that occurred as she walked to her sport utility vehicle following a meeting of political leaders, city police said.
Two armed men in their twenties to thirties approached Scanlon and demanded her vehicle's keys. According to authorities, one man drove away in her car while the other got into a second SUV and followed the two as they fled.
Numerous personal and work-related things belonging to Ms. Scanlon were stolen in the stolen vehicle, police added.
The Philadelphia Authorities Department was assisting the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which took over the investigation due to the victim's congressional status, police said.
Ms. Scanlon, 62, who has served in the House of Representatives since November 2018, commended the police department for its "swift response" in a brief statement shared on Twitter.
Lauren Cox, the congressman's spokesman, said the congresswoman had just concluded an outdoor meeting with other political leaders at FDR Park in South Philadelphia to discuss future reconstruction plans for the region when the carjacking occurred.
"I am relieved that Congresswoman Scanlon was not physically injured, and my thoughts are with her during this difficult time," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said in a statement.
Police will not speculate on whether the carjackers singled out Ms. Scanlon due to her recognition as a lawmaker or public figure.
Ms. Scanlon is a House Judiciary and Rules committees and the House Administration Committee's deputy chair.
