Because of the 500 millimeters of rain that fell in the previous three days, the government of Bahia, Brazil, declared an emergency in 38 villages.

More than 2,000 people have been forced from their houses in the municipality of Jucuruçu as a consequence of severe rainfall in the previous few hours, according to the Brazilian state of Bahia's Superintendence of Defense and Civil Protection (Sudec).

Heavy rains have been recorded in 38 localities across 24 municipalities since last Tuesday, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency in the area.

The municipality of Jucuruçu is one of the most hit, with more than 500 millimeters of rain falling in the previous three days. The Gado Bravo and Jucuruçu rivers swelled as a result of the heavy rains, displacing almost 500 households, or over a quarter of the population.

The most serious threats include landslides and ravine landslides, as well as isolation due to bridge damage that prevents access to the rest of the region.

Itamaraju, the second most hit city, received 527 millimeters of rain and six houses collapsed as a ravine slipped, resulting in the deaths of three members of a family.

Macaroni, Medeiros Neto, and Guanambi, among others, have been affected by the circumstance. Ilhéus' Civil Defense personnel, for their part, described the situation as "serious," citing more than 40 floods, collapsed structures, fallen trees, and landslides.
