A prominent doctor was kidnapped and killed in northern Afghanistan, his family said Saturday.
Mohamed Nader Alemi was kidnapped in Mazar-i-Sharif two months ago, and his kidnappers wanted a ransom, according to his son Roheen Alemi. After haggling down their initial demand of more than double that, the family eventually paid them $350,000, he said.
Despite the payment, the kidnappers killed Alemi and dumped his body in the street, according to his son. On Friday, they called the family and informed them where to look for it, he added.
“My father was badly tortured, there are signs of harm on his body,” Roheen Alemi said.
Alemi worked for the government's provincial hospital in Mazar-i-Sharif as a psychiatrist. He also ran a private mental clinic, which was considered to be the city's first.
