A state of emergency has been proclaimed in British Columbia, Canada's westernmost province after a big storm disrupted road and rail connections in the region.

The Canadian Armed Forces have been dispatched to assist hundreds of displaced individuals who have been stuck since the storm struck late on Sunday.

During a visit to Washington, DC, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed to support and stated troops will help rebuild.

A landslide killed one lady and left two people missing.

Thousands of people are still evacuating after an "atmospheric river" - a broad strip of moisture in the air that moves water from tropical areas to the poles - dropped the region's monthly rainfall average in 24 hours.

Regional officials have blamed the natural calamity on the consequences of climate change.

In a press conference on Wednesday, British Columbia Premier John Horgan said the emergency order went into force at midnight local time (20:00 GMT).

Travel restrictions, he claims, would keep people off flooded highways and guarantee that crucial products "reach the areas who need them."

"There's not a person who hasn't been touched or will not be affected by the events of this past weekend," he said, adding that "these catastrophes are becoming more often as a result of human-caused climate change."

Horgan stated that British Columbia must "get the seven billion other souls who exist on this planet to recognize that we need to act now to safeguard ourselves from these sorts of future calamities."
