The Associated Press reported that British counter-terrorism police apprehended three men on Sunday in connection with an explosion at a hospital in the city of Liverpool that killed one person and injured another.

According to the report, the three guys, whose ages ranged from 21 to 29, were apprehended in the city's Kensington neighborhood.

The arrests were made hours after police were dispatched to claims of a taxi explosion at Liverpool Women's Hospital on Sunday morning.

Although the explosion was not deemed a terrorist assault, police said counter-terrorism officers led the investigation and detained the men under the Terrorism Act.

"So far we understand, the car involved was a taxi, which pulled up at the hospital shortly before the explosion occurred," Merseyside Police said in a statement. "Work is still going on to establish what has happened and could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything."

The car's male passenger perished while the driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police stated that they were "keeping an open mind" on the cause of the explosion.

The United Kingdom has been the target of several terrorist strikes in recent years. Ali Harbi Ali, a member of the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization, stabbed UK legislator David Amess numerous times last month during a visit to a church.

In February 2020, a guy stabbed and injured three persons before being shot dead by police in south London.

Three months previously, at London Bridge, three people were killed in a terrorist attack.

In May 2017, 22 people were killed when terrorist Salman Abedi detonated a bomb at the Manchester Arena during an Ariana Grande concert.

In June 2017, London Bridge was also the site of a terrorist incident in which ISIS-inspired assailants ran down pedestrians, killing two. They then stabbed three individuals to death at the adjacent Borough Market.
