According to Belarus' state media, a guy wanted by the FBI in connection with the Capitol incident on January 6 is requesting asylum in the country.
Evan Neumann, 48, is wanted in the US on allegations of violent entrance and disorderly behavior on Capitol grounds, as well as assaulting and resisting law officials during a civil case.
The presenter declared that Neumann "sought justice and asked tough questions" and "lost practically everything and is being punished by the US administration" in a preview of an interview conducted with him aired by Belarusian state media on Monday. According to the Washington Post, Neumann informed state media that a lawyer advised him to travel to Europe before being put to the FBI's Most Wanted List, and he walked into Belarus on foot after four months in Ukraine. He also stated that he does not believe he has committed any crimes.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, dubbed "Europe's last dictator," has accused the US of inciting demonstrators who marched against him last year, accusing him of stealing the presidential election; the majority of the international community feels that the election was manipulated in his favor. Thousands of demonstrators were detained and beaten, with some alleging torture in detention.
Tim O'Connor, a spokesman for the US Embassy in Belarus, which is situated in Lithuania, told the Post in a statement that he couldn't say anything about Neumann because of privacy laws.
