Former US President Donald Trump has offered his support for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro following a parliamentary committee's recommendation that he be charged with "crimes against humanity" over his Covid-19 response.

On Tuesday, seven senators from an 11-member Brazilian Senate commission agreed to press charges against Bolsonaro, based on a high-profile report that summarized the results of a six-month investigation of his administration's response to the outbreak.

Trump issued a statement shortly after the announcement, saying that Brazil was "fortunate" to have Bolsonaro "working for them." He was referred to as a "wonderful President" by some.

Trump said he would “never let the people of his great country down.”
