As Palestinians struggle to feed their families, Gazans have become increasingly vocal over rising food prices.
Following concerns from Palestinians in Gaza, Hamas has blamed global trends for rising food costs in the confined coastal enclave.
According to the Hamas-run economic ministry, the surge in prices is not restricted to the Gaza Strip, but is being felt all over the world as a result of the coronavirus epidemic and supply chain disruptions.
According to Osama Nofal, a ministry spokesman, food prices have risen by 16 percent in countries around the world.
It comes in the wake of a huge spike in food costs in Gaza, where many Palestinians live in poverty.
Nofal said the ministry will prevent merchants from exploiting customers and exaggerating the prices of goods.
"Our field staff will follow up on this matter and punish those who violate the prices issued by the ministry," he said.
Gazans claimed they were surprised to see the prices of key essentials increase without warning.
According to Palestinian officials at the Hamas-run ministry of economy, lentils, chickpeas, sugar, wheat, ghee, and maize oil are among the items whose prices have risen considerably, with hikes ranging from 10% to 30%.
Sugar has increased in price from 1.57$ per kilogram to 2.04$ per kilogram, while flour has increased in price from 0.50$ per kilogram to 0.62$ per kilogram.
