Poland's constitutional court had previously ruled that national law took precedence over EU law in areas where they conflicted, setting the country on a collision course with the EU's executive arm, the European Commission.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated that Poland has no plans to exit the European Union, despite opposition and government factions accusing each other of wanting to leave.

According to him, the Constitutional Court's ruling "confirmed what literally follows from the content of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, namely, that constitutional law has superiority over other sources of law."

Poland's opposition and government have recently accused each other of pulling the country out of the European Union. The Constitutional Court of the Republic decided on the supremacy of the Polish Constitution above EU law on Thursday evening.
