On Friday, the Philippines reported its highest daily number of coronavirus infections, as authorities eased a lockdown in the capital to allow more businesses to operate and alleviate financial hardship for poor families.
On August 6, more than 13 million people in the national capital region were placed under lockdown as the highly contagious Delta variant aided in a resurgence of infections that has strained hospitals.
On Thursday, a Covid-19 task force agreed to allow more businesses to open their doors on Saturday. However, a stay-at-home order for non-essential workers and a restaurant dining ban will remain in effect.
